Stride

 2022

Work selected for the Short Waves / Long Distance program which aired as part of the  Shortwave Shindig, a multi-hour celebration of shortwave history, art, and culture held at the remote Winter SWLFest .

Listening to short-wave radio is like traveling a long path. There are times where the path is sinuous and loud other times silent and flat. You have to be patient. There are times when you hear people other times all you hear are atmospheric sounds and you are all alone. No human presence. The same path changes in accordance to atmospheric phenomena and time of day. Always something new around the corner. Learning to adapt your stride to the path.

Circuit

  2022

Selected for Liminal Sounds annual open submissions are featured around a curator-devised theme "What is not a map?"

CircuitEveryday we cross electrical magnetic paths. Invisible boundaries affecting all that it surrounds with concealed interference. Electric fields detected using coils. A process called induction. Mapping electromagnetic paths to understand the complex web of interference surrounding us. Listening to electrical fields is like listening to the invisible.

Lurker

 2019
Selected for Liminal Sounds annual open submissions are featured around a curator-devised theme "Retreat, Disappearance"

LurkerThe word lurker with all of its negative connotations has always fascinated me. Although it became mainstream with the internet, its origin is much older. But why should it have negative connotations? Why can it be just someone who listens, observes and contributes when he or she thinks it’s opportune?

Today we are much too worried of not being heard that we are pressured to contribute ideas without first thinking things through. So let’s lurk, observe and listen.

Play with Noise

Part of 60 Secondes Radio broadcast
Most of us have been in a situation where the noise is unbearable, hard to negotiate. In some cases it's not possible to avoid. The solution play with the noise, be creative. Use the noise to your advantage by manipulating it as it arrives at you ears.

A large percussive surface exposed to wind, debris, rain, drizzle, sound waves and in the case of this photograph, man made noises from maintenance crews such a work ropes, glass cleaning tools and impacts. This large glass surface acts like a reflector amplifying the sounds that reach it. Found sounds where used to construct the soundscape.

"Hearing Vibrations" is on Radiophrenia 2017

"Hearing Vibrations" is scheduled for broadcast on Saturday the 12th of November at 5:30 pm.

Hear it on 87.9 FM if you in the Glasgow area or online.

Hearing vibrations, when inaudible sound transposes senses and touch goes to hearing. We feel vibrations but we don't hear them. They are never the less present. Capturing these vibrations with sensors bring these sounds back into the realm of the audible from the sense of touch.

These vibrations are transmitted through solids and the sound captured is different for each medium where the vibration is present while the source of the vibration remains the same. This work is based on this premises that although the vibrating source may be the same, the captured sound varies wit the medium.

The sounds captured for this work are of the vibrations produced by a small vibrating motor that is placed on various materials thus producing different sounds.

Radiophrenia 2017

RadiophreniaThe work Hearing Vibrations will be part of the Radiophrenia 2017 broadcast on 87.9FM.

The event will take place in Glaslow from the 6th to the 19th of November 2017.

"Radiophrenia is a temporary art radio station – a two-week exploration into current trends in sound and transmission arts. Broadcasting live from Glasgow’s Centre for Contemporary Arts, the station aims to promote radio as an art form, encouraging challenging and radical new approaches to the medium."

Twenty eight - IFAR Musique Concrète Formes dans l’espace compilation

Twenty eight a 4'33'' piece is part of the IFAR Musique Concrète Formes dans l’espace compilation

This work with a duration of 4`33`` was produced using sounds recorded inside an outside of the number 28 streetcar which circulates in Lisbon Portugal. It is a very old streetcar that crosses most of the city and is a tourist attraction.

The sounds were recorded inside the streetcar to capture the passenger noises with omnidirectional microphones and on the outside to capture the motor, rail and break noises using a short shotgun microphone.

All sound were recorded in mono and mixed to stereo. I tried to alter as little as possible the sounds,  relying mostly on editing.

The sounds used in the work suffered the following processes, reversing of sound, sampling of small portions, repetition and panning.

"Fuzz" is part of the Wave Farm Short Waves / Long Distance Repository

"Fuzz" is now part of the Wavefarm Repository which is comprised of a selection of works submitted to "Short Waves / Long Distance," an open call for composition exploring the sonics of the shortwave radio spectrum (2-30 mHz), and the experience of long distance listening.

Organized by Wave Farm and The North American Shortwave Association, the call was announced in conjunction with the 30th Anniversary of the Winter Shortwave Listener’s Fest and Wave Farm’s 20th Anniversary, both of which are celebrated in 2017.
